Cyber resilient and reliable LEO satellite communication systems: security communication and connectivity, software security, IoT sustainability, privacy-preserving, and disinformation detection
Abstract
Low orbit earth (LEO) satellites have developed rapidly recently and facilitate many new services. However, major security challenges remain in LEO satellite communication systems, including the risk of data jamming, eavesdropping, interception or tampering, and viruses attacks in the transmission process. This project aims to improve the cyber resilience and reliability of LEO satellite communication systems. The four-year integrated research project explores the aspects of Physical Layer, Software and Protocol, and Applications in LEO satellite communication systems. Five major issues, security communication and connectivity, software security, IoT sustainability, privacy-preserving, and disinformation detection, will be addressed. Physical Layer addresses the security communication and connectivity of the LEO satellites on the aspect of the authentication and anti-interferences, serving as the communication foundation of this project. SDN Software and Protocol addresses the security assessment and security performance of the LEO satellites under the software defined network (SDN) framework. We also consider the LEO satellite system combined with the terrestrial 5G network and research the resilient systems and digital forensics with the IT/OT environment. The aspect of Applications explores the privacy issues faced by using data, focusing on providing privacy-preserving machine learning and mechanism against side-channel attacks, and combines multi-modal characteristics such as a large amount of multimedia content on the Internet, and user communication behaviors and channels to detect false information and malicious users.
The principal investigator (PI) of this project, Professor Shih-Hsuan Yang, is the Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer of National Taipei University of Technology (Taipei Tech). He invited 8 professors in Taipei Tech and 4 professors from other universities with expertise in cyber security to join the group. Moreover, Prof. Hsin-Piao Lin, the director of Taipei Tech’s Institute of Aerospace System Engineering, is a co-PI of this team. An application for the school-level Cybersecurity Research Center was submitted. The team expects to submit at least 10 papers to top-tier conferences or journals in cyber security area every year, and the number of papers published or accepted will increase to 4 papers per year. Taipei Tech has taken cyber security as a critical development area and has established a graduate degree program recruiting 45 master students and 5 doctoral students each year. In addition to academic research, the research team is also actively conducting projects in cooperation with domestic research institutions or industries, striving to put relevant results into practice and assisting in the national manufacturing of cyber security. Taipei Tech has established a close cooperation with the Taiwan Space Agency (TASA), including the establishment of the Communication CubeSat Components and System Environment Verification Laboratory. In terms of international liaison, the school has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Georgia Institute of Technology, focusing on satellite communications. The research team has discussed the possible cooperation with the Brno University of Technology in the Czech Republic. The execution of this project will enhance the school's Cybersecurity Research Center to become an important base for both research and talent cultivation in Taiwan and the world.
