Research Project

Design for Security of Chips Based on Authentication and Validation of Trustworthiness

Abstract

The main purpose of this proposed project is to develop attack-resilient mechanisms for protecting critical information infrastructures, with an emphasis on the new generation of smart grid. We will deal with information security threats of critical infrastructure from the three perspectives: hardware, system, and network. Five major goals will be targeted in the first two years: (1) Design for security of chips based on authentication and validation of trustworthiness, (2) Hardware security design for IoT applications, (3) Constructing a secure firmware update mechanism for the smart meter supply chain, (4) A study of homomorphic encryption technology in quantum cloud computing, and (5) Anomaly detection based on edge computing environment. The first two topics are to discuss the design and security testing of the hardware encryption module used in the smart meter communication unit, so that it has the ability to resist side channel attacks and can be authenticated. The goal of topic (3) is to establish a secure mechanism for delivering firmware updates to smart meters, using blockchain technology and software birthmarks. Topic (4) aims to research and develop quantum homomorphic encryption techniques suitable for quantum cloud platforms and quantum networks to better safeguard customer information security. The purpose of topic (5) is to establish next-generation mobile network security research and information security-related technologies in the 6G era. The main purpose of the research is to develop an effective and powerful anomaly detection framework for edge computing, which can accurately detect and classify anomalies in real time. In addition to basic research, the main project cooperates with the Chip Security Lab of the Initiative for Information Industry, Taipower, Taiwan Testing and Certification Center, and smart meter manufacturers, hoping to promote these project results.
